Correction: “The Permanent Household Hazard” report is unlocked & live

    September 7, 2026 /

Hi everyone, An automated system glitch earlier today sent out a notification stating that my new investigation, “The Permanent Household Hazard: How Pathogen Shedding Turns Pet Food into a Living Room Biohazard,” was password-protected. It is completely unlocked and live right now. You can read the full investigation directly on the site: The Permanent Household Hazard: How Pathogen Shedding Turns Pet Food into a Living Room Biohazard This piece breaks down weeks of research into the post-consumption biological loop—how pets eating contaminated food become long-term, asymptomatic carriers shedding live Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, and Campylobacter directly into home living spaces, and the systemic regulatory failures behind it. Apologies for the technical noise in…

The Permanent Household Hazard: How Pathogen Shedding Turns Pet Food into a Living Room Biohazard

    September 7, 2026 /

A raw diet doesn’t just put your pet at risk—it turns your living room into a self-sustaining bacterial hazard. Here is how pet biology, household moisture, and federal regulatory loopholes expose human families to dangerous pathogens.

FDA Failed to Protect Consumers Again. Here’s the Latest Proof.

    August 26, 2026 /

FDA's July 6, 2026 warning letter documents Listeria monocytogenes in finished raw pet food from Waves and Wine, Inc., sold under the brand Chef's Pure Pet Food. The letter also reveals product lines the company never tests for pathogens at all, an unvalidated kill-step method, and a single expired supplier guarantee standing in for real verification. Months after the positive test, and six weeks after the letter was finally made public, there is still no recall — and no public answer about whether the contaminated food ever left the plant.

The FDA Has Had the Power to Force a Recall Since 2011. It’s Used It Once — And Never for Pet Food.

    August 15, 2026 /

Darwin's Natural Pet Products sold contaminated raw pet food for nearly a decade while the FDA — which can force a recall — almost never does. Here's what that failure cost.

Gestation crates, veal crates, and battery cages aren't just livestock housing — they're the front end of a supply chain that renders straight into your pet's food bowl. A stalled bill called the Save Our Bacon Act just exposed how far Smithfield and Tyson will go to protect it.

Cannabis Edibles Are Everywhere — And They’re More Dangerous for Cats Than Anyone’s Saying

    July 7, 2026 /

Marion Nestle — the food-politics expert I respect enormously — wrote a post on her Food Politics blog about dogs and cannabis edibles (“Weekend warning: pets and cannabis edibles,”). It was a good, thorough piece. I noticed that it never mentioned the real danger THC poses to cats specifically — something I thought was extremely important for her to know. So I wrote to her. She wrote back, “Wow, I didn’t know that. Can I put your comment in my next article?” I said absolutely yes. The response to her original post had been so big that she was already planning a follow-up collecting reader stories: hikers rescuing stoned dogs off New Hampshire…

Pet Food Rendering Industry: What’s Really in Your Pet’s Bowl

    June 18, 2026 /

Late Monday night, a truck hauling hog carcasses lost part of its load on a highway near Clinton, North Carolina. Bloated animals scattered across both lanes of traffic. Police, firefighters, and the mayor himself showed up to the scene. Mayor Lew Starling surveyed the dead animals strewn across the roadway and said it was “the very worst of the worst I’ve seen.” It’s a story that traces straight back to the pet food rendering industry most consumers never think about. And here’s the part that matters most: that truck wasn’t headed to a landfill. It was going to a rendering plant. Those hogs, along with millions of tons of animal remains just like…

Big Pet Food’s Secret Ingredient: Why They’re Fighting to Keep GMOs Off Your Pet’s Label

    May 27, 2026 /

Editor’s Note (Updated May 2026): When this article was originally published in 2012, California’s Proposition 37, the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act, had just been narrowly defeated — in no small part due to a well-funded industry opposition campaign. The years since have largely validated the concerns raised here. The federal government eventually stepped in with its own GMO labeling requirement, the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard, which took effect in 2022. The pet food industry got almost everything it wanted: one national standard that preempted stricter state laws, narrow disclosure requirements that exempt many highly refined GMO-derived ingredients, and the option to bury disclosure behind a QR code rather…

Poisoned Pets is Now Pet Food Safety News

    May 25, 2026 /

Poisoned Pets has become Pet Food Safety News. The old name made sense when the site launched: sick animals, contaminated food, dangers consumers weren’t being told about. After 16 years, the work has grown, and the name should reflect it. If you’ve been here before, nothing essential has changed. The independent reporting, safety alerts, investigations, and consumer resources all continue. What’s expanding is the scope: policy, political influence, marketing tactics, and the industry pressures that shape what ends up in your pet’s bowl, and what companies are allowed to say about it. What’s Changing I’ll be spending more time on pet food policy and politics: how the industry tries to shape rules, expand…

Filthy, Putrid Conditions Found at Animal Feed Facility During FDA Inspection

    February 2, 2024 /

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter to ReConserve Inc., an animal food producer, on Jan. 3 detailing significant violations of animal feed manufacturing laws at its Baltimore facility. ReConserve is the largest recycler of bakery, cereal grain, snack foods, and related food by-products in the US by converting leftover, expired, and inedible bakery waste – moldy, burnt, undercooked bread, cakes, candies, cereal grains, chips, cookies, crackers, dough, flours, pasta, snack foods, tortillas, pizzas, and related food by-products – or, more accurately, human food waste into animal feed and pet food ingredients.  In the warning letter, the FDA described violations regarding ingredient storage conditions, in which agency representatives observed…
