Pet Food Industry Lobbyists Lost Their Battle With the Passage of the Landmark Climate Change Act
For the first time in history, the United States passed the first Act that addresses climate change, a bill the pet food industry fought every step of the way, one they said would put farmers out of business, hurt livestock, and raise the price of pet food. President Biden signed a bill on Tuesday that takes significant steps toward fulfilling his goal to reduce America’s dependence on fossil fuels. The bill invests $370 billion in spending and tax credits in low-emission forms of energy to fight climate change. And it aims to cut global warming pollution in half by 2030. In his remarks, Mr. Biden proclaimed victory as he signed the bill he…

Are Pet Food Reviews Legit? Think Again. Most Are Just Ads in Disguise
I was shopping the other day at the health food store, looking for the holy grail: un-scented certified organic shampoo, when my eyes popped out of my head. There, on the shelf was a – drum roll – a Certified Organic, Human Edible, Animal Welfare-Approved pet food! This was the day I had been waiting for! Do you know why I didn’t know about it? I don’t get out enough? Well, yeah. But the real reason is I never read pet food recommendations or reviews. Why? Because – I’ll be blunt – they’re bullshit. Really. I can tell you (because who else would know this) that nearly every site that reviews pet food…

The Pet Food Institute Is Fighting to Remove Incentives That Fight Climate Change
The Senate passed a historic climate bill this week at a time when scientists warn that nations have only a few remaining years to make deep enough cuts in carbon dioxide to avoid planetary catastrophe. The bill, The Inflation Reduction Act, aims to substantially expand federal support for alternative and sustainable fuels like renewable diesel production. In a statement, President Joe Biden said that the bill “makes the largest investment ever in combating the existential crisis of climate change.” But the Pet Food Institute isn’t cheering. FEED PEOPLE AND PETS FIRST CAMPAIGN The Pet Food Institute (PFI) and its allies, whose members make up the vast majority of all U.S. pet food and…

Watch Regulators Decide the Future of Pet Food at the First Ever Virtual AAFCO Conference.
Starting tomorrow you can watch live as government regulators hash out the model laws in a first-ever virtual conference. Listen – live – what ingredients are being considered for use in animal feed and pet food, and the new model laws on how some pet foods – including human-grade – will be allowed to be marketed. Twice a year state and federal regulators meet at the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) conferences and volunteer their time to work on pet food and animal feed issues. Issues that are complex as they are tedious that usually take months – even years – to complete. It’s an exciting opportunity for you to view…

How a Pile Up of Dead Cows Led to the Discovery of What’s In Pet Food. And It’s Much Worse Than You Think.
“Fresno County declares emergency as cow carcasses pile up. Plant to temporarily close” and “Merced County declares an emergency, as cattle carcasses pile up from rendering plant issue.” It’s just the sort of headlines I dread. Even though I know what the rendering industry does – which is recycling dead livestock, animal by-products, expired meat and used cooking oil – I began to wonder with a morbid fascination what does a cow looks like after it’s lain outside after – say – a week or two. I mean really look like. Up close. TEN DAYS It started when a boiler started leaking at a livestock rendering plant in Fresno County, causing it to…

Dog Dies After Being Treated With Gabapentin, Exposing Flaws In the Divide Between Human and Animal Drugs
When Ronda Archangelo’s dog Mimi died after being treated with a gabapentin solution that contained xylitol, she wondered how such a tragic mistake could have happened. When she asked her veterinarian for answers, it became clear that her veterinarian was unaware that the gabapentin solution she prescribed for Mimi’s seizure disorder had xylitol in it. And the more seizures Mimi had, the more gabapentin was she was told to give her. It wasn’t until later that she discovered that one of the symptoms of xylitol toxicity in dogs is seizures. Still, Ms. Archangelo wondered how a prescription with xylitol could have been filled when the pharmacists knew the prescription was ordered by a…

How a Lethal Ingredient in Human Medicine Prescribed by Vets is Poisoning and Killing Dogs
Ronda Archangelo never knew until it was too late, that the medicine her veterinarian prescribed for her dog’s seizure disorder, would poison and kill her dog Mimi. She didn’t know that with every dose, she was slowly poisoning her dog with the very drug that was supposed to make her dog better. It wasn’t until her dog died that Ronda found out that the medicine she had been giving Mimi was made with xylitol – an artificial sweetener deadly to dogs. THE BLACK HOLE Every year millions of dogs are prescribed human drugs by veterinarians – drugs that might contain the lethal sweetener xylitol. Drug companies do not make public the volume of…

Raw Pet Food Maker Defies FDA and Refuses to Recall Contaminated Dog Food
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is cautioning pet owners not to feed their dogs a batch Aunt Jeni’s Home Made frozen raw pet food after a sample collected from a store in the District of Columbia tested positive for Salmonella Infantis – a multidrug-resistant strain that will leave veterinarians with few options to treat pets with severe infections should they become ill. The FDA took the unusual step of issuing the warning because the agency believed the batch of raw food represents a serious threat to human and animal health, and the manufacturer didn’t. Aunt Jeni’s took the ill-considered step of refusing – flat out – to cooperate with the agency or…

Gag-Worthy Conditions Found at Raw Pet Food Company; FDA Gives C & G Raw Two Weeks to Clean Up Their Act
Over the holidays, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted a 15-day Warning Letter to raw pet food maker G & C Raw, LLC following inspections the agency conducted on April 22-25 and May 17, 2019. What FDA investigators found were appalling conditions inside the raw dog food company, a list of violations so long I will only give you the condensed version, here: Dirty, wet boots: Employees were observed stepping over totes containing raw product as drops of water from their boots fell into the containers thereby contaminating the dog food, which the FDA noted, “with undesirable microorganisms or other contaminants, such as dirt or other foreign material, that may be…
