UPDATE: Kroger’s Pet Food Recall Consumer Information
Kroger’s pet food recall is big news, however the news is limited in scope to Kroger’s own press release. What the press release doesn’t tell consumers is who manufacturers Pet’s Pride, Disney’s Old Yeller and Kroger’s Value pet foods.
I called Kroger’s toll-free number and the customer service person answering the phone didn’t know who manufactures their pet foods, Pets Pride, Old Yeller and Kroger Value.
They don’t know?
The customer service rep did say that they are just the distributors for Disney’s Old Yeller. He told me to call back on Monday and someone would be able to tell me.
In Kroger’s 2009 Fact Book, Kroger’s corporate brand categories produced at their manufacturing facilities include dry dog food and dry cat food. Kroger’s also operates 40 manufacturing plants, including two meat plants King Sooper’s Meat in Colorado and Vernon Meat in Vernon, California. Kroger’s listed McCanless & Company as Kroger’s brokerage services for pet food ingredients.
According to Susan Thixton on her website truthaboutpetfood, Kroger’s told her that they manufacture the pet food.
Disney’s Old Yeller Pet Food
Kroger’s is licensed to sell Disney’s Old Yeller brand pet food through their retail outlets, which number upwards of 2,400 locations according to Kroger’s website. Since Kroger launched Disney’s Old Yeller dog food in May 2005 and it “quickly became one of the retailer’s top-selling dog food brands” according to Walt Disney Corporation. Disney Consumer Products is thrilled with the arrangement.
“Bringing Disney’s Old Yeller brand to a trusted retailer like Kroger was a natural fit,” said Christopher King, category director, Disney Consumer Products FMCG. “Disney’s Old Yeller dog food is for those dogs that are part of the family.”
Not any more.
“This program with Kroger is especially exciting because it combines the leading grocer in the country with the world’s most-popular family entertainment brand to bring an affordable product line to market that kids will enjoy and parents will trust, ” said Harry Dolman, executive vice president of Disney Consumer Products for food, health and beauty.
Oh, dear. They’re not going to be too happy now.
About Kroger
The Kroger Co. is the country’s largest grocery store chain, with fiscal 2009 sales of $76.7 billion. That’s with a B. It is the second-place general retailer in the country, with Wal-Mart being the largest. So, they’re big.
So, they’re big. Really big.
As of 2010, Kroger operated, either directly or through its subsidiaries 3,245 supermarkets and convenience stores. In addition, Kroger’s also operates 40 manufacturing plants, including two meat plants King Sooper’s Meat in Colorado and Vernon Meat in Vernon, California.
Considering all the manufacturing they do, it’s no wonder they manufacture pet food, after all, what better way to turn a profit than to turn food waste into pet food? Kroger’s manufacturing plants produce breads, dairy products and thousands of other grocery items.

Been feeding our cats Pet Pride heart and eye immunity dry food for years and their eyes have stayed healthy, recently tried the dry food from Tractor Supply because they have larger bags and we really like the clumping litter price and quality we get there. But the food was a mistake some of them developed runny eye discharge within two weeks so back to Pet Pride after switching back in just over a week no more runny eyes.

I have been using the Pet Pride Immune support cat food for a while at my rescue when funds are short. The bag that I bought Saturday almost killed all 18 cats in my care. They couldn’t walk, wobbled when they stood up, profuse vomiting, urinating on themselves like they were in kidney failure, and lethargy. I have gotten most of them to snap back with a mix of baby food, evap milk, and water… had to do something with all of the vets closed for the holiday weekend. I put out two bowls of it to see if the raccoons would eat it (as they have a keen sense for good or bad food) and it is untouched. As a matter of fact, there is a bunch of dead ants laying around it.

I feed both my dogs pet pride can n dry dog food. I actually thought someone was poisoning them. My oldest poo poo 3 x a day n both are throwing up, not all the time but alot, n both are sleeping way to much. Guess i should throw it all out in go back to ol Roy. Oh me , im on limited buget can afford anymore vet bills. Help is it certain lot number or all. Calling kroger

Cyn. Old Roy’s no better. Simple logic thinking. If the dog food you’re buying is cheap I’m price that’s the quality of dog food you are buying. Cheap. Meaning no good don’t use it. Unfortunately the good stuff does cost money. Funny thing is Old Roy which is manufactured by Walmart doesn’t say where it’s actually manufactured at. You don’t know if the United States or in China. Lack to produce that information and keep it hidden the secret my best guess would be it’s made overseas in China. Otherwise why would they hide it? From now on I advise anyone who reads this to go to your feed store Local 1 wherever you have one. Sure prices will be store product prices they’re a lot cheaper for the same stuff and you can get good quality food at a lower price.

My cat died today (on Christmas) and we fed her Pet Pride dry cat food. I’m trying to find out if the food we fed her may have led to her demise? She was only 3.5 yrs old and was healthy. We found her dead this morning, with no signs of any trauma. Completely ruined me and my kids’ holiday…

Interesting information. I have a senior dog who has begun dry coughing when we began feeding our dogs Pet Pride. The other dogs do not seem affected but I am now concerned.

My Vizsla was taken to the vet with all the aflatoxin symptoms and came very close to dying. We had been feeding him only Old Yeller from Kroger and he had eaten over 3/4 of hes current bag which was a recalled bag – we did get a refund on it. The Kroger rep said the vet bill would not even be considered because it began on Oct 20 and he said that was before the recalled food was manufactured. My vet stated that every symptom mirrored aflatoxin poisoning. I believe the Kroger rep to be full of BS.

I am so sorry to hear of your plight. Vizslas are one of my favorite breeds.
Did you get a receipt for the refunded pet food from Kroger or did you return it to the store? Without documentation (the bag of food in question) you have no proof. I hope you saved the bag!
