Blue Buffalo Recalls Dog Food Due to Excess Thyroid Hormone Levels

After the FDA advised Blue Buffalo of a consumer who reported hyperthyroidism in one dog, Blue Buffalo decided to recall the dog food in question because the product may contain elevated levels of beef thyroid hormones. The recalled product, Blue Buffalo’s Blue Wilderness Rocky Mountain Recipe Red Meat Dinner Wet Food for Adult Dogs, was announced on Friday.

As with an almost identical recall issued on the same day, WellPet also recalled a product for the same reason: Elevated levels of thyroid hormone in dog food. As both foods are manufactured by the same third party, Simmons Pet Food a private-label and contract manufacturer, it was likely due to beef thyroid glands being included in both WellPet and Blue Buffalo’s formulas erroneously.

Dogs ingesting high levels of beef thyroid hormones may exhibit symptoms such as increased thirst and urination, weight loss, increased heart rate and restlessness. These symptoms may resolve when the use of the impacted food is discontinued. However, with prolonged consumption these symptoms may increase in severity and may include vomiting, diarrhea, and rapid or difficulty breathing. Should these symptoms occur, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Although the Blue Buffalo states they have not received any other reports of dogs exhibiting these symptoms from consuming this product, the FDA advised Blue Buffalo of a consumer who reported symptoms in one dog, who has now fully recovered. After working with the FDA, Blue Buffalo decided it would be prudent to recall the one production lot in question.

The voluntary recall is limited to one production lot of the following product:

Product Name UPC Code Best Buy Date
BLUE Wilderness Rocky Mountain
Recipe Red Meat Dinner Wet
Food for Adult Dogs 12.5 oz can
840243101153 June 7, 2019 (found
on the bottom of the can)

Affected products were distributed nationally through pet specialty and on-line retailers.

If your pet has consumed the product listed above and has exhibited any of these symptoms, please discontinue feeding and contact your veterinarian.  Consumers who have purchased the product subject to this recall should dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for full refund.

Consumers with questions may contact Blue Buffalo at 866-201-9072 from 8 AM to 5 PM Eastern Time Monday through Friday, or by email at  CustomerCare@bluebuffalo.com for more information.

my dog died from cushings disease. a benign tumor on the adrenal glands or putiatary gland which causes the dog to stay thirsty and urinate frequently eventually affecting all the organs and eventually your dog dies/ there is no cure but the vet can give you expensive medicine (vetoryl or trilostane)150.00 monthly 30 pills.bottom line-elevated thyroid(hormones). I fed my dog the best dog food ? Or so I thought Blue Buffalo/It doesn’t matter because all dog food is made from the rendering plants. I spent several thousand dollars trying to save my baby (Buddy) I watched him die a horrible death. These dog food co’s are killing our animals by feeding our animals food sold to them by these rendering plants after the so called processing.

I have a keen interest in and vast knowledge of pet foods. My dog was covered with acute dermatitis on her paws exacerbated by her licking on them. I was told to use cortisone. Now she is sick with adrenal gland disease. Thank you Buffalo Blue! It was too late when I realized that they had surreptitiously started using by-product meal which includes road kill. Never ever believe that Blue Buffalo is acceptable food for dogs.

Thanks for continuing to drum on the issue of contract/co-packers. Many consumers have no awareness of this issue at all.

I'D LOVE TO HEAR WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE.
